A native of Cuba, Mr. Ortega was graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in history. But sculpture -- in particular wood carving -- has always been his passion.
Thus it is that this artist has developed a remarkable ability to carve, most often from only a single block of wood, without the use of glue or nails. Working essentially in miniature, Mr. Ortega carves links which intertwine, one after another after another.
The artist states: "My artworks invite the viewer to transform them by manipulation, thus re-creating space through the manipulation of the pieces."
Exhibiting earlier in Cuba and now in the United States, where he presently resides, the artist has been a consistent winner in the miniature/shoebox categories of carving in scores of competitions, not just here, but abroad.
