Formerly from Canada, now residing in Mexico, international artists Nisha and Dan Ferguson collaborate in the ceramic medium, each employing a particular talent.

Dan sculpts the ceramic figures for the base, while Nisha renders her striking technique of hand drawing and painting on the bowls.  Classically trained, the Fergusons are one of the most notable painter/sculptor duos today.  They have been described as “two artists and two art forms integrated in one seamless unit.”

The Fergusons focus on design, form, color and texture.  They elevate the everyday form of the bowl to an elegant work of art and strive to create beauty as a celebration of life.

Dan creates the sculptural base which supports the bowl.  Each sculpture is made of plastelina and then cast as a small edition, usually 44, using a complicated and time-consuming piece mold process.  When Nisha draws and paints the bowl, each design is original and unique.

Dan explains:  “I am continuously learning how to edit the forms of life so as to describe the figure elegantly and without clutter.  Real life contains an infinite amount of detail.  It is my job to find just the right amount of detail in order to create something beautiful.  As in all things, there is beauty in simplicity.  This is the art of sculpture.  I also am continuously improving the technical side of sculpture:  proportion, anatomy and form.”

Nisha relates:  “After moving to Mexico, the first thing that infiltrated my work was the colors of this beautiful country.  I find that I am feeling freer to experiment with color in more unusual ways.  Line, color and composition are my playground and I use them to express everything I feel and see inside my head.”
