George Alexander
Born in 1940 in Picayune, Mississippi, a rural town northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. He pursued his desire to become an artist, receiving an MFA from the University of Mississippi in 1969 and continued his studies at the Estudio General Luliana in Mallorca, Spain and the University of Valencia in Spain.
In 1987 he left teaching to concentrate on his art. His work is highly prized by a growing body of collectors in the United States and Europe.
George Alexander’s extraordinary ceramic sculptures are unique artistic expressions rooted in the tradition of Italian Majolica. Richly glazed in a myriad of gloss and matte finishes, his unique interpretations are kindled by artistic influences as diverse as Japanese and Persian textiles, impressionist painting and primitive and tribal pottery.
Working with these contrasts and balances, Alexander’s work is fused with the glossy sophistication of European traditions, yet still contain the raw but essential elements of his medium. Crafted in a stoneware sculpture body that he developed after years of experimentation, he is uniquely adept in translating the constraints of specifications into highly original work that maintains his artistic vision.
The ceramic art of George Alexander is a narration celebrating life’s vitality; imbued with a sophisticated wit and humor, it reflects both the beauty and integrity of its subject and the clay.
